Mother’s Day is a special day and an occasion celebrated across the world in most families. On this day, we try to express our Love , respect , honor and gratitude for our mother. On this day , the Society acknowledges all the contributions and efforts of mothers , for the unconditional love , our mothers give us, and we can never be grateful enough, let alone ever repay.
History of Mother’s day.
The majority of countries that celebrate Mother’s Day, do so on the second Sunday of May. On this day it is common for mothers to be celebrated with presents and special attention from their Families Friends and loved ones. But it wasn’t always that way.
The traditional practice of honoring motherhood is rooted in history. Ancient rites had strong Sybolic and spiritual overtones, as societies tended to celebrate the Goddess and symbols of motherhood rather than actual mothers.
From the 6th century B.C the ancient Greeks celebrated Rhea, as the Magna Mater. the Great Mother of everything including the Gods. She was the wife of Cronus (Saturn) and the mother of Hestia, Hera, Demeter, Poseidon, Hades and Zeus, Her mother was Gaia (Earth) with whom she was often identified.
In 205 B.C her religion was introduced into Rome, where she was celebrated as Cybele during the festival of Hilaria. Mother’s Day started out as a day to honor Rhea.
The tradition was then brought to England where it is celebrated in March which was the festival of Hilaria to honor Cybele. No one quite knows when the day Became to celebrate all mothers rather than the Diet.
In the USA the first Mother’s day was brought about by a woman called Ann Jarvis, who was a suffragette, she wanted a day when all women were celebrated. Having seen Mothering Sunday in Europe, she fought and protested for the day for a long time and it was finally granted as a public holiday by then president Woodrow Wilson in 1908, Setting aside the second Sunday of May to be a special day to celebrate Mothers.
Ann Jarvis became disgusted at the commercial way Mother’s Day became and said she
regretted fighting for the day. Ann started to Suing places advertising Mother’s Day such as
florists and chocolatiers. In the 1930s she was arrested for trying to prevent the sale of flowers at a Mother’s Day event and disturbing the peace. In 1938 Ann Jarvis tried to Copyright Mother’s Day so she had full control over it, in her attempt she failed.
